Project Fiche – 2009 IPA Horizontal Programme on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection

 On 05, 06 and 07 July 2010, in the premises of the Environmental Protection Agency, meetings were held with representatives of the European Commission concerning the Project Fiche - 2009 IPA Horizontal Programme on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection.
At the meeting, the issue of storage of radioactive waste in Montenegro was discussed with a view to opening a storage of radioactive waste within the Center for Eco-toxicological Testing (CETI-a). They also discussed the following topics:

 

 

 • The process of licensing a storage of radioactive waste
• Safety storage report
• The impact of storage on the environment
• The procedure for dismantling sealed sources
• Location of storage and its internal organization
• Storage Equipment
• The procedure of commissioning the facility for dismantling the radiation source
• Beginning of the Storage Operation
• Removal and transport of radioactive sources
• List of sources
• Access to sources
• Funds for transportation of sources
• Transport containers

Representatives of the European Commission made suggestions on the following questions:

• Preparation of appropriate regulations that are required for opening and operation of the storage
• Establishment of the base for sealed radioactive sources
• Review of Safety Report for storage and transportation of sources.

Conclusions of the meeting are that through this project:

• 80% of EU legislation will be transposed,
• preliminary assessment of the Action Plan will be performed,
• help will be offered in detecting illegal trafficking, as well as help with regard to overlapping responsibilities of institutions in Montenegro.
Representatives of the European Commission are very pleased with their visit to Montenegro, and are willing to offer support and assistance in this field. After completed consultations, the  operation of the radioactive waste storage should begin by the end of September 2010.
